Elaine first began directing music at secondary school, where she directed choirs and bands while studying for her A-levels. After realising that she had a talent for bringing a musical vision to life, she majored in Ensemble Performance as part of her degree. As part of her course, she was fortunate to train in conducting under Lee Tsang and Graham Sadler as well as gain practical experience through conducting the Hull University Chamber Choir.

After finishing her studies, Elaine became the Musical Director for The Grantham Singers - directing operettas and Gilbert and Sullivan productions for them (for more details, please see the repertoire page). The society includes approx. 40 members and the position includes orchestrating, directing and conducting their productions. Their 'Diamond Jubilee Concert' in 2013 (directed by Elaine) won the NODA East Midlands Region 5 'Best Concert' Award.

Elaine is also currently employed as a Musical Director and Vocal Coach for Lincolnshire Star Academy where she works with (and conducts) the senior students for their annual musical. The senior students (and staff) from Lincolnshire Star Academy were recently featured in a Channel 5 documentary called 'Through a Child's Eyes.' The filming for the documentary took place while the students were working on and performing their production of 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.'

Elaine also undertakes conducting and musical directing work on a cover or short-term basis - sometimes covering at the last minute for an indisposed musical director. She has recently undertaken work like this for the Stamford Gilbert and Sullivan Players. For one year only (from September 2014 - August 2015), Elaine also conducted the Belvoir Wassailers (a male voice choir based in the Vale of Belvoir).

Being a fully qualified primary teacher, Elaine is also used to directing children's choirs and ensembles and was coordinator and musical director for the West Grantham Federation Choir between 2008-2009 before joining the Lincolnshire Music Service.

Elaine is always interested in putting her experience to use with other societies, bands, orchestras etc. on a cover or long-term basis. If you are interested in hiring Elaine as a Musical Director, then further details of how to contact her are available on the contacts page.

"There were many lively toe-tapping tunes which provided a test of stamina for both the conductor and musicians but MD Elaine Bishop and the musicians in the pit performed superbly." (NODA review, 'La Vie Parisienne', 2012)
